SULTANATE

(Northern India)

BENGAL SULTANATE

The initial history of the Bengal Sultanate is none too clear. Towards the end of the twelfth century AD, the army of Ghurid ruler Muhammad bin Sam commenced a series of conquests across northern India. Following the capture of Delhi, and the placing there of Qutb-ud-din Aibak as viceroy. Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khilji led his army eastwards in to Bihar and Bengal than in A.H 601 (A.D 1204/5) the city and district of Gaur (Lakhnauti) in the western part of Bengal was captured and a government set up in the name of the Ghurid sultan and issued the coins in the name of Muhammad bin Sam. After the death of Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khilji, so many in charges had come for government of Bengal, who alternated between declaration of independence and subservience to the Delhi sultan, but Ilyas Shah governed Bengal who moved his capital from Lakhnauti to Pandua, which was renamed Firuzabad. In A.H 756 (A.D 1355) he signed a treaty with Firuz-III of Delhi by which Bengal was formally recognized as an independent kingdom.

In A.D 1572 (A.H 980) Daud Shah was became the ruler of Bengal, that than Daud Shah thought he was strong enough to do battle with the Mughals who were once again in power after the fall of the Suri dynasty. Daud however, was mistaken. The Mughals were ultimately captured and executed in A.D1576 (A.H 984) with his death; and Bengal became a part of the Mughal Empire.
