BIJAPUR SULTANATE

When Bahmani ruler’s sovereign power was seized, after A.D 1518 the sultanate broke up into five states, By provincial governors, and founded new dynasties and sultanate, one of it Bjapur.

The ‘Adil Shahi’ dynasty of Bijapur traces its origins back to Yousuf Adil Khan, a powerful noble at the Bahmanid court. During the reign of Muhammad-III, he was appointed governor of the province of Daulatabad After the accession of Mahmud Shah, Yousuf retired to Bijapur and declared independent, in A.D 1490.Fifth ruler Ali Adil Shah-I (A.D 1558-1580) is the first Sultan of Bijapur to have issued coins and call himself ‘Sultan’ of Bijapur in A.D 1558.

In the last period of Bijapur, there was not firm government and the Mughals continued to eat away at the kingdom. In the April of A.D.1685 (A.H 1096) the final Mughal siege of Bjapur began. In September A.D 1686 (A.H 1097) Sikandar Adil Shah walked out of his capital and surrenders himself and his kingdom to the Mughals. He himself was enrolled among the Mughal nobles as Khan and received an annual pension. Thus did the Adil Shahi sultanate of Bijapur come to an end.

Gol Gumbaz is the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah (A.D 1627-57) of the Adil Shahi dynasty who ruled the Sultanate of Bijapur from 1490 to 1686. The tomb, located in the city of Bijapur, was built in 1659 by the famous architect, Yaqut of Dabul. The huge dome measuring 37.9 m (124 ft) in diameter making it among one of the largest dome structure in world.
